Home Again Home Again
Apr. 22nd, 2008 10:19 amWhy I married into a cooler family that you did:
The two really big guys are Mark's twin cousins. And the guy in the white shirt walking around the ring and eventually getting the crap beaten out of him? That is the "Promoter of the event", Doug E. Bucks. AKA: Their dad.
Yep, some of my in-laws are wrestlers.
Overall, Oregon was good. It was one of those trips where, even though the occasion was sad,we got to see a lot of family we hadn't for a while and spend some really good time with them and have fun with them. For me, that is a sign of a well-lived life, people coming together to have fun as they remember your life. Of course, I'm also a big believer that if you're holding a memorial service and no one is laughing, you're doing it wrong.
We went to the Coast right after grandma's services on Friday and that was wonderful! The weather was crazy - wind, hail, sun and, on Sunday morning...Snow!! We still went walking on the beach almost every day and spent a lot of time drinking Mcmenamins beer with Jeremy and Lori. We got Jeremy hooked on their wheat beer.
Being in Salem was fun but kind of strange. We went to see how Willamette is doing without us. It was the first time since 1993 that we have been there while classes were in session and the memories were so thick we had to brush them aside. I went into my old Sorority house and we walked around the outside of some of our old dorms. Delta Tau Delta, Mark's house, is trying to make a comeback on campus so there were fliers about that everywhere and there was an information table set up near the Bon Dome (Campus Dining Room) and Mark got to talk to a couple of those guys for a while.
It was so funny to me. When I was there, the Phi Delts had been kicked off campus and Metanoia had taken over their house. Metanoia was the last place I stayed on campus, because I could get a single there, and I ended up loving it. It was ostensibly a non-greek community named after the Greek word for "change" but, in reality, we were a collection of Trekies, Gamers, Hippies and other assorted nerds. Needless to say, I felt right at home there and it became my favorite dorm experience. It was one of my Metanoia friends who introduced me to Mushing and started me on this crazy internet addiction.
Phi Delts are now back on campus, the Delts are gone but trying to come back, Metanoia is no more (at least in it's original state) but as we walked around where the Delt house was you could just tell that this was where the new Metanoids had taken over. That was the first place I saw the fliers about a big "Hoookmunity Meeting" sponsored by the Friends of the Hooka, Phi Delts and the Joint Chiefs.
I got to stop at the old Kresge Theatre and see Chris for a couple of seconds. He had to run to do a student-audit and we missed getting together later. They are in the process of gutting the theatre building so the black box where I did my Senior Acting Recital is stripped down and filled with large props and set pieces. The Kresge itself is bare, all of the seats taken out so only the risers remain. It was spooky. All of the prop rooms and the costume storage were bare. The green room had been emptied but the pole where we would write all the names of the shows we did was still there with all the names intact. Including The Rules of the Game,
littlebluedog!!
I didn't have a camera with me, but I geekily got pictures of my 3 favorite shows on my phone.
All in all, a good trip.
