This year I included a wish on my holiday_wishes list for people to support local theatre and shows. This is your place to tell me about what you have seen this year.
I helped a friend with her one act and ten minute play showcase entries by letting her tap into my religious studies knowledge and then offered my talents for her series of staged readings before she went on to write the final draft of each her pieces. I also started writing another play of my own this year.
Other than that, my support has had to be from afar and mostly in promoting my friends and their works. :)
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. I've seen attack ships on fire off the shores of Orion. I've seen seabeams glitter at Tannhauser gates. ...all those moments in time...will be lost... like... tears.. in Rain.
I worked on the World Premier of SACCO & VANZETTI (VINCE, AL & TEDDY) in Fitchburg, MA. I worked on the American Premier of PLAYING SINATRA in NYC. I saw: VIEUX CARRE by Tennessee Williams. I was in the first reading of MODELING MOTHER in Fitchburg, MA. I saw a reading of MODELING MOTHER in NYC. I saw FROG AND TOAD in Gardner, MA. I saw THE WIZARD OF OZ in Acton, MA. I saw THE LARAMIE PROJECT in Fitchburg, MA. I saw ARCADIA in Fitchburg, MA. I saw AUGUST OSAGE COUNTY in Fitchburg, MA.
I saw more stuff than I can remember, though much of it was with webcowgirl who has blogged about most of them... (http://webcowgirl.wordpress.com)
I only did two shows of my own this year - the modern world premiere of Fair Em, which has been attributed to Shakespeare but most likely is not, and the UK premiere of Darling of the Day, which starred Vincent Price on Broadway in 1968 and I think hasn't been done since.
This seems impossible, but as I look back on the year, I don't think I've been to a single live event. I still have a little over two weeks to correct that, but this detail just adds more depth to what a strange year this has been. Thank you for the reminder.
Let's see: Jersey Boys, Producers, West Side Story, Fiddler, A Christmas Carol, Anything Goes, Mamma Mia, Million Dollar Quartet, Hairspray (twice, two different versions), Doubt, Priscilla, Rock of Ages, Beauty and the Beast, Sugar, Showboat, Billy Elliot and a few more... All of these were in California. We see a lot of theatre...
Heh, your icon reminds me of something one of my TD's said. One day when an actor was telling us that if it wasn't for him (and his ilk), we would have nothing to do. My TD responded, "If it wasn't for us, you'd be standing on a bare stage, naked and in the dark." Interesting enough, the guy couldn't make it as an actor and now works as a tech. There is such balance in nature.
I did the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Summer Seminar as a teen. One of the projects was we had to defend high school theatre (as in "please don't cut our program!) to their board of directors. We did scenes, talked about the impact doing theatre had on us personally, then one of the guys got up and announced "Theatre without techies is just two naked people in the dark trying to emote!"
I have noticed that most of the theatre communities here have gone dormant. That's really a shame. I used to belong to a couple tech ones, but all that wanted to talk about were lights. Granted they are important, but so is every other aspect of techdom... did get some great jokes from other there, though.
I will occasionally go searching for different communities on LJ and it's a shocker at how many there were but now are completely dormant. We are trying to kick alive one and it's tough because the owner is MIA and she has the community partially queued. It makes it very hard to post there.
Almost forgot about the live music -- I've seen a LOT and performed in some. But I'll skip that and focus on actual theater.
I performed in Trial by Jury and Thespis, amateur opera, very nice productions.
I saw Too Much, Too Much, Too Many, off-off-Broadway. Kinky Boots, Broadway (superb but expensive). Don Quixote at Utopia Opera, which is a professional-level company but since the singers aren't paid, I guess it's amateur. Machinal on Broadway. I saw something billed as Mardi Gras Burlesque at a local bar, but it wasn't very um, theatrical. Dinner With Friends off-Broadway. Der Freischutz at Utopia Opera. Bellmore Jewish Center's Cabaret Night (not quite theater but with lots of music from Broadway musicals). Ruddigore by the Blue Hill Players, followed the same day by Cabaret off-off Broadway. Violet on Broadway. Falstaff at Utopia Opera. Just Jim Dale off-Broadway. That's it so far this year.

So tired.
